Seniors' Health Program

For residents of New Brunswick aged 65 & older

If you're age 65 or older and uninsured, you may qualify for the Medavie Blue Cross Seniors' Health Program for residents of New Brunswick, which provides prescription drug coverage and optional hospital and health benefits.

Who can apply?

Uninsured New Brunswickers 65 years of age or older may enrol. 

When should I apply for coverage?

You will be accepted into the Seniors’ Prescription Drug Program if:

—you apply within 60 days following your 65th birthday, or

—you are older than age 65 and you apply within 60 days following the cancellation of a previous prescription drug plan, or

—you are older than age 65 and you apply within 60 days following gaining eligibility for NB Medicare as a new resident. 

When does this program become effective?

If you apply within 60 days following your 65th birthday, coverage becomes effective on the first day of the month following your application. If you apply within 60 days following cancellation of another prescription drug plan, coverage becomes effective on the first day of the month following the cancellation date. 

What if I am late applying?

If you did not apply within the 60-day limit, you may apply as a late applicant but are required to complete a medical questionnaire. You may or may not be accepted, based on your medical history.

Optional Hospital & Health Coverage

To complement your drug coverage, consider adding hospital coverage and health benefits to design a plan to best suit your needs.

Hospital benefits 

Hospital benefits cover 80% up to $50 per day up to a maximum of 90 days per year towards a semi-private or private hospital room. This plan does not provide hospitalization coverage for the first three months following enrolment.

Health coverage 

Health coverage offers Basic and Enhanced plan options.

Both Basic and Enhanced health coverage include:

  • Custom-made ankle foot brace

Enhanced health coverage also includes:

*Late Applicant Provision: There is a one year waiting period for certain benefits under Health Benefits coverage (Basic and Enhanced) if you do not apply within 60 days following your 65th birthday, or within 60 days following the termination date of other health benefits, or within 60 days of obtaining NB Medicare as a new resident
