Make a Bucket List Work for You

Summer vacation is a great time to focus on your bucket list – doing things you’ve always wanted to do but didn’t have the time or energy to tackle in the other seasons.

Everyone has a bucket list. That’s the list of wishful things you want to experience in your lifetime. The idea is to get through as many items as you can while adding more to the mix!

Benefits of keeping a Bucket List

We often engage in light conversation around our bucket list, even joke about it, but the bucket is a useful metaphor for achieving meaningful experiences that shape our lives and support our values.

It’s also recognition of our own mortality. The saying comes from the old reference “kick-the-bucket” to describe end of life. The items on our bucket list provide hope and optimism for achieving personal fulfillment in our lives. Here are some lasting benefits:

  • Establish and maintain meaningful goals in life
  • Create excitement and anticipation
  • Provides more focus on making plans
  • Inspires others
  • Creates memories

Bucket List Plans for Summer

Many experiences are focused on outdoors and whole summer vacation itineraries can be built around the items on your list. You may want to try skydiving. Build your travel plans to include an accredited skydive zone and follow that dream! Or you might want to hit every consignment shop in the region searching for second-hand gems. Maybe a wish is just to gaze at the stars in a low-light setting. You could combine that wish with camping and search out low-light campsites. For many of us, summer is a great time to dip into the bucket!

When you choose a goal to add to your bucket there are a few factors to consider.

  • Health: Pick an experience you can realistically achieve given your health status. If you can’t commit to training to finish a marathon, it’s best to choose another experience.
  • Budget: A six-month global cruise might be an appealing bucket item but, let’s face it, for most of us it’s out of reach. It’s a good idea to have a sound financial plan that includes Blue Cross insurance.
  • Interests: It’s always great to hear about an experience from someone else’s bucket but before you jump on the idea for your own bucket make sure it matches your interests.
  • Research: Planning is half the fun and ensures you choose the best experiences for you.
  • Share: Be open to enjoying your experiences. Go for the family bucket and reap the benefits of shared experiences.

No matter what interests you, everyone can benefit from having a bucket list. Keep it current and keep it close, because you never know when you’ll want to raid the bucket for another adventure! If your bucket list has travel items be sure to pack travel insurance that allows you to afford any health mishaps along the way.
